Following the devastation of the Haiti earthquake, RedR is working to support international relief efforts by ensuring that aid workers have the highly specialist emergency response skills necessary to save lives. So far our networks operating in Haiti have indicated that water and sanitation, shelter and security will be major issues. These are all key areas of RedR expertise. We are keen to act quickly to address urgent needs in order to improve the effectiveness of the global response.

    Situation

On 12 January Haiti was struck by the most powerful earthquake in over 200 years, with tens of thousands feared dead and up to three million affected. Within a matter of minutes of the 7.2 magnitude tremors, homes, businesses and government offices were brought crashing down and power supplies were knocked out. The capital Port-au-Prince has been totally devastated and essential electricity, water and phone services destroyed. Relief organisations from around the world have responded by sending aid personnel to Haiti. RedR is preparing to send an Emergency Response Team to assess determine what water, sanitation, shelter, security and coordination support RedR can provide over the coming weeks and months after the essential aid has arrived. Working closely with relief workers on the ground, RedR will conduct a full needs assessment to determine what training and skills support are needed by international, national and local aid agencies. With a better understanding of needs, we will design and deliver vital technical training and support programmes in Haiti to help aid personnel save and rebuild more lives. We are urgently appealing for your support. £200,000 will cover both the cost of sending the Emergency Response Team to Haiti and the cost of establishing an in country programme for a 4 month period to deliver essential life-saving skills in the areas of water, sanitation, shelter, security and other key areas identified. RedR's programme will ensure that relief interventions followoing this catastrophe will be appropriate, coordinated and sustainable. With your help we can save more lives now and in the future.
