The secret of Eton over the centuries has been the diversity of the boys it has attracted. Today 1 in 5 boys at Eton receives some sort of bursary or scholarship. We wish to increase this and provide more substantial bursaries. An Eton education should be accessible to boys of character and ability whatever their financial circumstance.

    Situation

Eton's Campaign for a New Foundation aims to raise at least £50 million for the school. At the end of 2009 nearly £30 million has been given or pledged. A key objective of the campaign is to increase endowment dedicated to bursaries which allow Eton to look beyond parental wealth to an applicant’s intellect, character and ability. We also wish to raise new endowment for other key projects and welcome gifts to help us maintain and improve facilities. Eton is not as wealthy as many assume. Rich traditions and achievements do not translate into financial riches. Eton's original Foundation provides just 11% of Eton’s annual income. This is not enough. An institution of Eton’s standing (and others like it) should receive between two and four times as much support from its endowment.
