Goethe's wise words sum up Reprieve's big idea. Establishing the rule of law and making sure everyone has access to legal representation has never been more important.

    Situation

In celebration of Reprieve’s ten year anniversary in 2009, rather than asking for a specific project, we are asking here for general funds to support and develop our vital work in the next decade to come. Reprieve is a vibrant legal action charity of just 14 full time staff punching well above our weight. We provide frontline investigation and legal representation to prisoners denied justice by powerful governments across the world, from death row to Guantánamo Bay and other secret prisons. Our lawyers were the first in to Guantánamo Bay, demanding that the prisoners there be given legal representation. We have acted for 51 Guantanamo prisoners who are now free and we currently act for a further 32. We also assist 26 British Nationals facing the death penalty around the world, none of whom can afford to pay for representation. A recent example of Reprieve’s success was when our youngest client, Mohammed el Gharani, was released from Guantánamo Bay to Chad, after a seven-year ordeal that began when he was just 14 years old. Reprieve represented Mohammed in the US courts, where a Federal Judge found he was not and had never been an enemy combatant, and should be released. Mohammed finally returned to Chad on June 11th, and his words to Reprieve, on our speaker-phone, as he walked out of the Chad police station, rang through the office: “I am Mohammed el Gharani and I am free!” It was a wonderful moment. Please help us to have more of these wonderful moments. Donate to Reprieve, support us, and join in our battles and successes. The work is vital, inspiring, important and unfortunately, increasing!
