    Situation

Initial reports indicate that the death toll is extremely high and will increase without emergency assistance. Port-au-Prince has been devastated, including critical city infrastructure such as electricity, water and phone services, resulting in communication difficulties as response action gets underway. UNICEF are already in Haiti and and have been since 1949. UNICEF is focusing on logistics to ensure supplies reach the most vulnerable people as soon as possible. UNICEF has supplies pre-positioned in its regional warehouse in Panama and are already being deployed to the affected populations. We have already distributed oral rehydration salts to combat deadly diarrhoea episodes, water purifications tablets, tarpaulins and tents to provide temporary housing. Further supplies are on their way containing tarpaulins, blankets, emergency health kits and jerry cans, but much more is needed. Working in coordination with all other UN agencies present on the ground as well as other local partners, UNICEF is uniquely positioned to provide immediate support to the victims of this unfolding humanitarian crisis. UNICEF staff will work tirelessly to support the immediate provision of safe water, sanitation and basic healthcare for children and families in Haiti. £400 will provide a tent to act as a shelter, temporary school or clinic.. £70.30 will provide 10 families with sufficient water containers, buckets, soap and water treatment tablets that will last for one month. •£12,670 will buy a Health kit which includes essential medicine needed to treat the injured, protect children from disease and to care for pregnant women. Each emergency kit provides basic but vital medical supplies and equipment to care for a community of up to 10,000 people.
