BAC is seeking to raise £1.5 Million towards the first phase of a capital re-development of Battersea’s Grade II* listed Town Hall. The building is a beautiful space but in need of refurbishment. Working in partnership with Stirling Prize nominated architects Haworth Tompkins, BAC aims to undergo a sensitive re-development of the building to reflect BAC’s new participatory approach. Central to the first phase is re-developing the current spaces on the first floor, to create improved, new spaces for theatre making and participatory activities that will be safer and more appropriate for young and old people’s activities. The new spaces will remain highly flexible and dynamic, including temporary floor coverings and removable partitions and equipment. Money raised through the Big Give Matched Funding Challenge will go towards re-plastering walls; new electrical infrastructure; heating systems & light fittings; acoustic treatment; feedback walls; vision panels in doors; improved security and storage for coats and bags. It will also allow us to refurbish the large Victorian windows – many of which currently do not open safely – which will increase natural light and improve ventilation and airflow. New light fittings will also ensure maximum light quality in the winter months when many participatory activities take place after dark. These first floor spaces are at the heart of BAC geographically and philosophically enabling participants to continue to engage with, and be inspired by, artists and audiences across the programme and building.
