    Situation

Julia’s House cares for life-limited and life-threatened children throughout Dorset in their own homes and at Julia’s House Children’s Hospice. We have one of the smallest children’s hospice buildings in England. We intend to extend the hospice and build a Families and Therapies Wing. This project will increase the facilities we can offer, expanding our capacity for service provision in order to enhance the quality of life for children with complex medical needs and their families in Dorset. The project will provide a Bereavement Suite, giving a family a dedicated space to spend precious time with their child in privacy until the funeral, and supporting them through the grieving process. The Wing will also have private space for Bereavement counselling, which helps to negate the consequences of suppressed grief in family members of affected children. Building the Families and Therapies Wing will also result in a 30% increase in hospice space, which will enable us to provide more hours of care. The Wing will additionally provide space for multiple therapies: Play Therapy, enabling affected children to access play opportunities given their individual needs and abilities; Complementary therapies, providing diversionary pain relief and stress reduction in affected children and family members; and Music Therapy, helping children with pain management, managing feelings of anxiety, and providing important opportunities for fun and play in the absence of physical movement.
