    Situation

There is a clear need for increasing funding for the voluntary sector. UK giving is still only about 25% of that in the US and it can be particularly hard for small charities and for social entrepreneurs to raise money, particularly for core activities. We welcome applications for core funding, and because our funding events tend to raise an average of £7000 for each presenting charity or social entrepreneur, the presenting charities/entrepreneurs are almost always small enterprises for which a donation will make a real difference. The Fundng Network, as an intermediary, keeps its operational costs as low as possible, but as we grow we do need to have these costs covered. We rely heavily on interns and the input of our fantastic Trustees, however, the ambitious growth plan of our Executive Director would benefit from some operational funding to ensure its success. The clearly measurable objectives of this project to expand our work are: - To raise £2 million for social change causes over three years from April 2008. - To increase the number of TFN funding events held by at least one a year in London as well as one a year in other UK cities, and also overseas, including specialised events in London. - To engage additional people by having them attend a TFN funding event, by educating them in the wide variety of needs and the projects addressing them, and through enjoyable and engaged philanthropy. - To help a larger number of relatively small social change charities raise funds, both more efficiently by bringing them together with large groups of potential funders, and by being open to funding core costs and start-ups. We are a good organisation to support to extend philanthropy for the mass affluent, in contrast to the almost exclusive attention paid to the exceptionally wealthy. We are the only open ‘giving circle’ in the UK aimed at the general public, and projects brought to TFN London cover a wide spectrum of needs and groups within the city. The projects are almost invariably presented by people actively involved in the presenting organisation, and often by end beneficiaries themselves.
