    Situation

Disabled people in Thailand still face great difficulties because of prejudice and a lack of understanding. Many disabled people only receive basic education, and are generally seen to be unable to look after themselves or earn a living. The situation in rural areas is worse, with many disabled people being hidden from view as the family fear they will bring shame upon them. The vocational school in Pattaya, South East Thailand has been challenging these views for 25 years, by providing vocational training to disabled young adults. During this time there have been over 2,000 graduates, all of whom are now in employment or run their own businesses. The ethos of the school is to “enable the disabled”, so students are encouraged to get involved in disability organisations and campaign for disabled rights, as well as providing positive role models by taking part in sports – many have competed in the Paralympics. Through these activities they are able to help other disabled people to gain self-esteem and to have the confidence to achieve their goals. The new school in Nong Khai, North East Thailand, will train up to 100 disabled people at any one time. Training will be offered to disabled young adults from North East Thailand, as well as those from Laos and Cambodia. In ten years up to 400 disabled people will have graduated from the school, with a real chance of earning a living and becoming independent. Also, through the graduates involvement in other disability organisations, as well as providing role models for disabled people, this project will touch the lives of around 20,000 people in this region. The total cost of this project is £427,000, which includes the construction cost, fittings and furnishings and a vehicle. We plan to raise this money both from the UK and Thailand, from government sources, companies, charitable trusts and individuals. We also expect the running costs to be around £70,000 a year, and plan to raise this money locally, through government sources and individual support.
