Pre-form 1 is a highly successful residential summer school which supports 100 Maasai girls in Tanzania through the risky transition from primary to secondary school; when girls are often forced to marry. It increases enrolment and retention and addresses the lack of female teachers in the region.

    Situation

In pastoralist, Maasai society, girls are discriminated against. The illiteracy rate in the remote Ngorongoro region is around 75% and women are worst affected. Pastoralist school attendance rates are very low compared to the national average and only 30% of girls attend secondary school. Girls are more likely to drop out, especially at the transition from primary to secondary school when many are forced into marriage instead. Education quality is poor and there are very few female teachers.

    Solution

This project combats entrenched gender discrimination and encourages communities to send girls to school and support their education. Extra tuition fills the gap between Swahili primary school and English-speaking secondary so that girls gain confidence,
