One of the main challenges for brain tumour patients is coming to terms with their diagnosis and prognosis. The National Brain Appeal would like to employ a clinical psychologist to support this growing group of patients and their families.

    Situation

The Brain Tumour Unit at The National has seen a 100% increase in new patients since 2010 (600 cases in 2012) . Sadly patients who are diagnosed with brain tumours have little access to support in coming to terms with this life-limiting disease and its effects on themselves, family and friends. The service would also support staff working in the unit to deal with the psychological challenges their nursing roles bring.

    Solution

The provision of this service at The National Hospital will address a clear need - at present there is little support available once the patient has left hospital and care in the community is fragmented. The service will offer in and out-patient sessions
