    Situation

The Trauma Service offers children timely and effective help for complex referrals which is not available on the NHS. CHUMS supports traumatic bereavement as well as sexual abuse and witness to domestic violence. Unresolved trauma can cause not only anxiety and depression but can also lead to self-harming, eating disorders, drug and alcohol problems and suicidal tendencies. We work with our children and teenagers to understand their grief and build resilience, helping them to learn how to cope

    Solution

Approximately 1/3 of children and young people exposed to a potentially traumatic event will go on to develop post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Most of these will also develop another diagnosable mental health disorder which can have a substantial impact on their ability to engage with school and family life. Trauma cases are commonly complex due to the nature of trauma and require lengthier interventions - typically 12-16 weekly sessions to allow time for family stabilisation and therapies
