Developing countries like Egypt, Kenya, Indonesia and Iraq ‘owe’ money to the UK because the government sold goods to repressive regimes. The details of these debts are often secret. Debt prevents impoverished countries from developing healthcare, education and their wider economy. Moreover, as long as unjust debts go on being repaid, debtor countries are not free of their past, while creditor countries have no incentive to make lending fairer or more democratic.
