Imagine not having a GP for that scary lump, no dentist when you're in pain, no hospital when having a baby, no doctor when your child breaks a leg and no optician when your aging eyes cloud over. Then, the Africa Mercy, crammed with volunteer doctors and nurses, docks near you!

    Situation

The Africa Mercy is in Togo during 2012. Togo has 1 doctor for every 30,000 people (there's 75 doctors for 30,000 here in UK). Worse, doctors charge for their help. So, an operation of any kind is impossible for ordinary people. Small health problems grow, stopping you going to school or work, and major problems (especially if giving birth) lead to an early death, or a lifetime of disability and pain. Our 450 volunteers give loving care, train doctors and help build clinics.

    Solution

The Africa Mercy has 6 operating rooms, a 78 bed ward and an intensive care unit. We help as many patients as possible. Using local radio/TV, we hold huge appointment sessions in parks and football stadiums, then travel to remote rural areas to find more
