Book Aid International increases access to books and supports literacy, education and development in sub-Saharan Africa. We provided over half a million new books to over 2,000 libraries last year alone and have sent more than 30 million books to partner libraries since 1954.

    Situation

    An estimated 153 million adults in sub-Saharan Africa lack basic literacy and numeracy skills, two-thirds of whom are women, and millions of children remain out of school. When people cannot read or write, when they lack the skills and abilities that a good quality education offers, they are condemned to a life of poverty, ill-health and social exclusion. Across the world, 171 million people could be lifted out of poverty if all children left school with basic reading skills. UNESCO, 2010
