We urgently need to purchase four ventilators for our highly skilled paramedics to use when attending critically ill or injured patients anywhere in Wiltshire or surrounding counties. The ventilators will replace our existing stock, which we have had for several years and are no longer as effective.

    Situation

When a critically ill or injured patient stops breathing, a ventilator is used to help keep them alive by artificially breathing for them. We can also proactively take charge of breathing for some patients who have received a pre-hospital emergency anaesthetic. Our current ventilators are several years old and lack certain features that would enable our paramedics and doctor to provide the best possible care to patients. Furthermore, they cannot be used on children.

    Solution

Replacing our old stock of ventilators with a newer, more sophisticated model called Oxylog 3000 will improve patient care. This model can adapt to individual patients (including children), potentially reducing the amount of sedation required when we take over their breathing. The Oxylog 3000 is already used in hospital emergency departments, meaning that doctors undertaking shifts with us are already experienced in its use. It also has additional features, such as non-invasive ventilation.
