    Situation

400,000 children, under the age of 16, struggle to afford or access food. This issue is exacerbated during school holidays when free school meal provision is not available. Dring this time, hunger and social isolation are a reality for many young Londoners. Teachers report malnourished children returning to school after the holidays having fallen behind compared to their peers. any young people will never claw back this learning and health disadvantage to fulfil their potential

    Solution

We have worked on developing mechanisms to reduce food vulnerability for children for many years and our programme KITCHEN SOCIAL gives children a safe place to go during the holidays where they can socialise and get a free healthy meal. It’s about much more than just food. The programme has a vital role to play in protecting young people from low-income backgrounds from learning loss and other negative impacts of holiday food insecurity.
