    Situation

Alex is a cramped overcrowded area lacking facilities for children and young people. Extreme poverty and little to constructively engage children means that many are drawn into crime, drug taking and early pregnancy. Township schools are under resourced, many children live in small tin shacks and lack the space and facilities for study and recreation. Despite the poverty and harsh conditions there is an abundance of talent and potential which all too often is not developed or wasted.

    Solution

By working with our sister organisation in South Africa and our community projects in Alex we will help fund the building of a centre which provides safe recreational and study spaces for children and young people. Sigya Sonke the dance project Gumboots has long supported, urgently needs a permanent home. Their original base in a disused factory was burnt down. They presently meet in a cramped back yard unprotected from the weather with no proper access to essential facilities.
