    Situation

The Bornean orangutan’s population is forecast to decline by 86% due to the destruction and fragmentation of its tropical forest habitat. Even protected areas, such as national parks and wildlife reserves, are at risk from illegal activities such as fires, logging, mining and agricultural encroachment. Consequently, the loss of the forests forces orangutans into closer contact with humans resulting in some apes being injured or stranded and needing to be rescued.

    Solution

Orangutans need vast areas of intact tropical forests to survive in the wild. Orangutan Foundation actively protects over half a million acres of habitat, home to more than 5,000 wild orangutans. Orangutan Foundation has built a network of forest guard posts and runs regular patrols to monitor and prevent illegal activities. This is backed up with the use of technology, GPS and conservation drones to strengthen the protection of these globally important forests and orangutan populations.
