    Situation

Two earthquakes in the last 48 hours have had devastating effects in Sumatra, Indonesia with and estimated deathtoll of 1,100 (source: reliefweb/UN) – these numbers are expected to rise as thousands are still trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings. Children are among the worst affected. Telecommunications, electricity and water supplies are cut off and medical supplies, emergency shelters and food items are needed immediately as well as education and post-traumatic counseling being a priority in the long term. In order to respond as quickly as possible to the situation, Plan International has an assessment team in place monitoring the situation and has already started distributing 500 tarpaulins, 500 mats and 500 hygiene kits in Padang City. The focus for the upcoming weeks will be on distributing emergency shelter and non-food items followed by a second phase of education and psychosocial support. Initial relief efforts are expected to cost approximately £1.1 million GBP.
