An education programme for Jewish high schools helping to reduce preconceptions and mutual distrust of Israel’s Arab citizens, that is increasingly prevalent amongst Jewish youth. The aim is to create a next generation of Israeli Jewish youth who are more educated and tolerant of Arab society

    Situation

Israel's Jewish and Arab children mostly live separate lives and attend separate school systems. Combined with the trends of separate living, consumption of different media, and linguistic barriers, the separation of the school systems is the foundation of Jewish-Arab isolation and mistrust in Israel's citizen population. In the past decade, Israel has witnessed a dramatic negative shift in levels of tolerance and democracy, both in attitudes of Jews and Arabs towards one another and in policy

    Solution

In the 2018-2019 school year we initiated a pilot programme in 4 Jewish high schools in Israel introducing a curriculum introducing Israel’s 10th grade Jewish youth to modern Israeli Arab society; its culture, religion, politics and challenges. The programme, taught by trained Arab facilitators provides what is often the students’ first opportunities to encounter an Arab citizen. We seek to expand the programme to 10 of Israel's Jewish public schools reaching 250 Jewish students and 40 teachers
