Creature is the second full-length production created by Akram Khan for English National Ballet, following his acclaimed reimagining of Giselle that premiered in 2016. Creature, is a tale of human ambition inspired by Shelley’s Frankenstein, the myth of Prometheus, and Buchner’s play Woyzeck.

    Situation

Ballet often suffers from being seen as out-of-touch and elitist, especially amongst young people. To appeal to the next generation and to new audiences, classical ballet must evolve from its traditional roots and explore modern ideas, relevant to today. New productions are key to making this happen - to create works bringing diverse influences into ballet's heritage. Yet creating and performing new works has a high element of risk attached, resulting in barriers to their creation.

    Solution

In Creature, English National Ballet will collaborate with Akram Khan to bring an iconic narrative into the modern world. In the work, he and his team will blend the unique influence of Kathak (a classical Indian dance discipline) with the precision and technique ballet, lifted by a score of electro-orchestral sound. Our second collaboration together, we have a solid basis for producing a high-quality and successful production, attracting new audiences to ballet, both now and in the future.
