Education is a proven route out of poverty, yet in Zambia 700,000 children are not in school. We will assist 140 of the most marginalised orphans & other vulnerable children, to access school. We’ll also provide counselling services, making sure that they are able to participate fully in society.

    Situation

We are addressing the social consequences of AIDS. Zambia has been badly affected leaving 1.2m orphans - many are deeply traumatised. The Government and family networks cannot cope, and, as a result, many of the poorest orphans and other vulnerable children cannot afford to attend school. The Government lacks the funds to pay for education and social services, so ZOA-UK is partnering with deprived communities helping them take action so that children can access and remain in education.

    Solution

Partnering with two grassroots groups in deprived communities in Kasama, we will identify those most in need assessing their risk of abuse, exploitation and child labour, and help them to attend school. This will involve funding fees, uniforms, books, stationery and transport, where necessary. Counselling will ensure social and cultural pressures that affect children’s ability to participate in society or progress in school are identified and, where possible, practical solutions implemented.
