Every week in the UK around four babies die of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Each death is one too many and we know there is more that could be done to help drive down SIDS. If all parents were aware of how to reduce the risk of SIDS more babies’ lives could be saved.

    Situation

The UK still has one of the highest rates in Europe of babies dying before their first birthday. Over 500 babies die suddenly and unexpectedly in the UK each year and the parents of around half of those babies will never know the cause of death. Losing a baby or young child is one of the most difficult experiences any family will ever face. We want to stop all sudden and unexpected deaths of babies and young children.

    Solution

Our work has contributed to an 82% fall in the number of sudden and unexpected infant deaths in the UK since the ‘Back to Sleep’ campaign in 1991. Saving the lives of over 20,000 babies. If all parents were aware of how to reduce the risk of SIDS more babies’ lives could be saved. The best way to reach more families with our lifesaving safer sleep advice is by training health professionals, by distributing our safer sleep advice leaflets nationally and by a holding a national awareness week
