    Situation

Surrey’s appearance as a wealthy county is deceptive. Throughout there are tight pockets of deprivation, enclosed within housing estates or even within a few streets, with high levels of child poverty, low income, poor mental health and other significant problems. Often they are adjacent to affluent areas that camouflage the extent of need, driving down statistics and diverting public funds to areas of more widespread poverty in other parts of the country.

    Solution

The Art for All learning and social enterprise programme offers people with significant challenges in their lives with the opportunity to learn new and transferable skills, to gain a qualification, to get a job, and to support them in their rehabilitation. 2018-19 saw 31,315 participations; a 70% increase since 2016-17. We are experiencing this increased demand because the programme delivers increased attainment, aspirations, employability and wellbeing.
