Women’s entry into the criminal justice system is often underpinned by unmet, gender-specific needs & experiences such as domestic & sexual violence, mental health & poverty. With the right support, women can rebuild their lives. But too often women struggle to be heard, their needs are overlooked, & they become trapped in a cycle of offending & vulnerability. To change this, our community must better understand and prioritise their needs & experiences.
Clean Break will use theatre to help women with lived experience of the criminal justice system or at risk of entering it to find their voice, build their confidence and skills, and transform their lives. Alongside this we will create platforms for their voices to be heard within society through public-facing theatre projects and productions, which directly engage a broad cross section of the public.
“When I came to Clean Break, I felt I had no choice but to be leaden/heavy. Now (5 years on) I have no choice but to fly. I've made a 360' turn around”
‘I’ve always felt that I’ve not been listened to, feeling that I’ve not got a voice; It’s having that voice to say I’m here, and that’s my opinion, it’s people who listen to me and that’s what I get here [Clean Break]. I’m not afraid to speak up.’
“Clean Break means so much to me. It has helped me in one of the most difficult and challenging times of my life”
“Not sure how I would have got through if it was not for Clean Break. The biggest thank you, thank you”
