Marsabit is one of Kenya’s poorest and most deprived regions. It is the newest of Five Talents' programmes in Kenya. Partnering with the Mothers' Union, we provide innovative microfinance and microenterprise education, training and support to build capacity and resilience, uniting communities to thrive against the storms of poverty.

    Situation

Over 63% of Marsabit residents live below the national poverty line of £25/month (that’s less than £1/day!). Climate change and scarcity of water and pasture has left the predominantly pastoralist population vulnerable to food insecurity and loss of livelihoods. Low literacy has further exacerbated poverty. In Marsabit, only 28% of women are literate (and 47% of men). A Kenyan with no formal education is 26 times more likely to be financially excluded than one with a tertiary education.

    Solution

We will provide education and training in literacy, numeracy, finance and business skills. We will also support communities to set-up Savings and Loans Groups; providing a safe-place to save, borrow and invest money to help members develop and grow their small businesses. Enhancing our members’ ability to earn, save and diversify will help to build resilience against shocks and emergencies such as times of drought or sickness.
