We want to reduce loneliness and isolation amongst older people in Southwark by connecting them to our 25 exercise and activity groups. We also want to provide transport to ensure nobody is excluded from attending because of mobility problems or not having access to car or public transport.

    Situation

In Southwark, over 9000 people over the age of 65 currently live alone. Older people can find it difficult to get out and about because of mobility problems, not having family or friends, or dementia. When this leaves them lonely and isolated, both their health and mental wellbeing are at risk. Lonely and isolated older people are more likely to depend on their GP and hospital, enter a care home early, and lose their much valued independence.

    Solution

Our social groups help ensure older people age healthily and happily, remain independent and feel connected to the community. We run 25 groups offering activities from exercise to art, bridge and more. They meet in church halls, sheltered housing, care homes and pubs. External measurement shows our groups have a positive impact on social lives and energy levels. We make sure everyone can attend by providing a door-to-door transport service using a community minibus and volunteer drivers.
