We will work with youth homelessness charity St Basils to offer young people the chance to join a ‘technical’ youth theatre. They will gain vital skills and have progression opportunities to apprenticeships and employment. The project will culminate in a symposium, raising awareness of homelessness.

    Situation

In 2018 the Midlands saw the country’s biggest increase in homelessness. St Basils now works with over 5000 young people a year. It can be hard for individuals to escape the cycle of homelessness and access opportunities to turn their lives around. Many young people would benefit from positive experiences and activities that enable them to build a fulfilling future. We need new platforms where organisations and advocates can raise awareness, share learning and bring about vital systemic change.

    Solution

St Basils works with young people to help them to find a home, develop their skills and prevent homelessness. We will offer these young people a chance to take part in a technical Young REP. This special youth theatre will offer the opportunity to learn about backstage roles in theatre. Our ambition is that many of these young people may then follow other pathways into apprenticeships or employment. In order to recruit the participants we will hold informal engagement sessions at St Basils.
