Moss locks up carbon as it grows. Restore our precious Mosslands and the moss continues to grow - it is a 'perpetual sink' for carbon. Mossland is 'our' rainforest, being dug up to put on people's gardens. Over 98% of the North West's Mosslands have been lost - help us to save it for the future! £200,000 to match fund our project to buy and restore mossland. Free lesson on reducing your carbon footprint!

    Situation

Mossland (Lowland Raised Peatbog) is an irreplaceable resource – once lost, it is lost forever. As mossland is destroyed, it releases large amounts of carbon. However, if the mossland is restored and actively growing, it will take up carbon forever. Unbelievably, mossland is still being dug up for fuel and for horticulture, even though alternative fuels and compost are available. We urgently need to stop further losses of mossland, buy or manage neglected sites and turnaround the situation. The Wildlife Trust is the local expert at restoring mossland – we have already restored Heysham Moss, Red Moss and Astley Moss – 100 hectares in total. Will you help us restore all of our area’s neglected mosslands? We have already raised over £850,000 to buy and restore mosslands. We have saved an extra 15 hectares of mossland already this year. Your funding would unlock a further £200,000 from Natural England to help us continue this vital work. We have a priority list of 27 other mosslands, totaling around 400 hectares. Our aim is to link these fragments of land into living landscapes of mosslands and wetlands. The benefits are: Carbon sink for the North West. Precious habitats restored. Threatened wildlife protected. Green space protected. Local people educated about the ‘rainforest on their doorstep’. Volunteers actively involved.
