    Situation

Emergency Situation On 30th September, a massive earthquake, measuring 7.6 on the Richter Scale occurred in West Sumatra. The effect has been devastating, with nearly 180,000 homes damaged and more than 88,300 homes and other buildings completely destroyed. It is feared that thousands of people are still trapped under damaged houses or missing. Early reports indicate that hundreds of people have been killed, and thousands injured, and this number is expected to increase significantly over the next few days and weeks. Furthermore, thousands of people have been displaced and are homeless. Access to many areas is difficult, as roads are damaged, fuel unavailable, and communications systems down, and electricity lines are damaged. Hospitals have closed, and an estimated 90% of Government offices have also been destroyed in the earthquake, seriously affecting emergency coordination further. Thousands are now without food or shelter, and the lack of clean water leaves them exposed to further suffering as health levels decrease rapidly, especially for the elderly and young children who are the most vulnerable. The extreme conditions are potentially a breeding ground for diseases as hygiene levels drop exacerbating an already desperate situation. What We Will Do Action Against Hunger have already sent emergency teams to the region to assess the situation first hand. The teams have already made a rapid assessment of the needs of the survivors, and are in the process of a coordinated emergency response. With a field office in the region, access to the affected regions, and decades of experience in disaster relief across the globe, the Action Against Hunger team has a strong understanding of the area and the needs of the people to make an effective impact in relief and support following the disaster, both in the short term and longer-term support. Action Against Hunger desperately need funds to intervene in the following key areas; - Food Distribution – to rapidly deliver urgent food aid in the short term to the thousands of displacement survivors, and to ensure food availability for the most vulnerable over the longer term. - - Water - to quickly supply clean safe drinking water in the short term, and to begin repairing and rebuilding damaged water pipe networks and water treatment facilities. - - Sanitation – Supplying simple hygiene kits with soap and disinfectant to survivors to prevent diseases. And a longer term approach to ensuring hygiene in survivors camps as homes are rebuilt (e.g. building latrines, sanitary facilities etc). Funding Needed To tackle the immediate needs of those most affected, Action Against Hunger are urgently appealing for funds to deliver on the three key areas of intervention. As specialist in Food and Nutrition, along with Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Action Against Hunger will work in coordination with other aid organizations to ensure that your money is spent wisely, and that our expertise will be efficiently utilized to ensure that the desperate needs of survivors of this major disaster are effectively addressed. Action Against Hunger need to raise £1m for this emergency, to meet the immediate needs, and appeal for help in order to raise these funds. With your support, we can do it.
