Help us release Government GRASSROOTS ENDOWMENT CHALLENGE money for Cumbria. For the three years to March 2011 the UK Government will provide £1 for every £2 donated (more when tax is reclaimed) to help build endowed grant making funds at the community foundation. The challenge is a great opportunity not only for donors to add value to their giving, but to help community groups strengthen their communities “from the grassroots”.

    Situation

Cumbria Community Foundation has been giving out Grassroots Grants to a diverse range of groups and projects serving communities across the county. What sorts of projects will benefit? Grants range from £250 for topsoil for a veterans' football club in a deprived part of West Cumbria to a number of £5,000 grants involving trampolining and circus skills, art and sports such as cricket, equipment for an inshore rescue vehicle, lightweight movable staging for community theatre and arts productions and a self help training programme for people with bipolar disorder. We have funded alterations to a voluntary group's building to provide post office facilities, family history, archery, community cinema, domestic violence alarms, migrant workers' integration and a community marquee for a village whose hall was beyond repair and more.... An award to support women and child victims of domestic violence helped several families living in the Women’s Refuge in Carlisle go on a holiday to Paignton. “My child’s face when she saw the caravan was one of shock as to how nice it was and in the week we had there it was wonderful for each and everyone of us to forget our troubles and to totally, fully relax. Many of us may never be able to afford a holiday ever again but I know that this one holiday will stay with us forever. For once my daughter can go to school and join in the conversations of where they have all been on their holidays.” Community groups are at the heart of building stronger communities. By donating to the Grassroots Endowment Fund or by creating your own grant making fund you can make a lasting difference to the people and communities of Cumbria. Any donations that are made, together with the match funding, are invested in special endowment funds and invested effectively for the long term benefit of Cumbria people in need. Every year your gift will be part of a fund that contributes to helping local people and, in that sense, it is a gift that keeps on giving. Gifts of any size may be made, but if you give over £10,000 you can also be involved in specifying the kinds of issues and geographical areas where your gift may be used.
