We are raising funds to build a new drop-in centre for people affected by cancer in Swansea and surrounding areas. Your help will allow us to build a purpose-built Centre to receive over 10,000 visits annually, and to lever in a match funding grant of £1.5m from the Welsh Assembly Government. We now need to raise just £100k to secure the full match funding grant from the Welsh Assembly Government. Any donation you make will bring in almost double and help us begin building this much needed Centre.

    Situation

Maggie's Centres have a fantastic track record of supporting people affected by cancer - both patients and carers/family members - in Scotland over the last 12 years. More recently, we have opened our first Centre in England, and this Centre, in Swansea, will be the first for Wales. We offer a wide range of information and support, including counselling for individuals and groups, welfare benefits advice, relaxation, stress management and complementary therapies, advice on diet and nutrition, and art therapy. No referral is required, and the whole programme is free of charge. We are fully endorsed and supported by NHS cancer clinicians. In Swansea, we already have an interim information and support service running, which received almost 2,000 visits last year. In common with all our existing Centres, we have commissioned a world-renowned architect to design the permanent building, which will allow us to expand the service on offer and accommodate at least 10,000 visits annually. The quality of the design and decor in our Centres make a huge impact, creating a calming and comforting atmosphere which helps vulnerable people find their feet again. The building will be in the grounds of the busy Singleton Hospital in Swansea, which provides cancer servies to the city and for people throughout Southwest Wales - a total population of about 900,000. To build this Maggie's Centre will cost around £2.8m. With a pledge of £1.5m from the Welsh Assembly Government and other funds already raised, we now need to find just £100,000 to begin building. The Welsh Assembly funding is conditional on us finding this balance, so any donation you make will bring in almost double its value in government funding. Please don't hesitate to contact us to find out more about our work, or to arrange to visit one of our existing Centres. Thank you.
