ShelterBox provides a fast response to emergencies worldwide, delivering emergency shelter and other aid for victims of disasters. To ensure aid reaches those people who need it most, ShelterBox uses teams of trained volunteers to oversee the distribution in the field - £250,000 would cover the annual costs of recruiting, training, equiping and deploying our volunteers around the world.

    Situation

Ensuring emergency aid reaches those people who need it most rather than just disappearing into limbo, being stuck at an airport or diverted to the black market is a major hurdle for all aid agencies. ShelterBox's solution is to use teams of trained volunteers - the ShelterBox Response Team (SRT). We deployed our first teams to Sri Lanka and Indonesia following the Boxing Day Tsunami and during 2007 - in response to various disasters - have sent SRTs to Kenya, Bolivia, the Solomons, Pakistan, Nepal, North Korea, Peru, Uganda, Somaliland and Mexico. In the field our teams base themselves in the community where they are working and operate in partnership with local organisations such as Rotary clubs. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and are currently recruited from the UK, Australia, Canada and USA. These teams are our eyes and ears on the ground. They provide vital intelligence in the form of in-country assessments of further aid requirements. They are also responsible for all in-country logisitics, overseeing the release of aid from customs, its transportation to the disaster scene and its delivery to individual families and communities. A donation of £250,000 would enable us to expand and improve our recruitment and training, as well as cover all the annual costs of the teams.
