Self Help Africa is putting its 25 years of experience in food production in Africa into finding effective and immediate ways of lessening the impact of climate change on the lives of some of the poorest people in the world. By ensuring that people have enough food and access to basic services, Self Help Africa is building their capacity and empowering them to make the changes that will improve their lives and safeguard the fragile environment for future generations.

    Situation

Droughts and floods are increasing in the nine countries we work in across Africa, meaning that families simply cannot grow enough food to feed themselves. This increases poverty, causes malnutrition and creates dependence on hand outs and food aid. Self Help Africa provides these families with the training and materials they need to get the most from their soils, earn a real income and most importantly move out of poverty with dignity. Materials include tool kits, seeds, tree seedlings, livestock, bicycles and treadle pumps on a loan basis, ensuring that the benefits are passed on to more people as the project progresses. This project will help communities to combat the effects of climate change. They will produce a wider variety of drought resistant, high nutrition crops; explore ways to improve soil fertility; use a variety of small scale irrigation methods; plant trees and use fuel efficient mud stoves that burn on crop stems, and protect existing wetland areas to ensure they are sustainable. £100,000 will enable us to work with more than 6,000 farmers in 2010 to mitigate the impact of climate change locally. This equates to less than £17 per family for a lifetime of change.
