A unique British Bhangra Musical - the first of its kind. Rifco Arts have been developing this musical since 2005 and we now want to take it to the final stage. Together with the cream of Theatrical and Musical talent together and the local community we have created a modern musical that is both original and relevant to a contemporary audience.

    Situation

We want to tell a story that centres around real Bhangra music; its origin and impact on our world today. From its humble beginnings in the fields of the Punjab region in India it has evolved from its folk music roots celebrating harvest and the coming of spring and is now firmly planted in wedding celebrations, New Year parties and Bhangra Club nights. This musical will be the first of its kind; a relevant musical set in a contemporary British setting. British Bhangra is unique to the UK and is a genre of popular music that fuses Punjabi traditional instruments, music and lyrics with UK pop, RnB, hip-hop, reggae and other world sounds. Its history in Britain dates back to the immediate post-war period when migrants from the Punjab, India, resettled in the UK. Since the dance boom in the 1980’s Bhangra has enjoyed a huge surge in popularity worldwide, both in its traditional form and as fusion British Bhangra. This is a story that is relevant to many cultures. The UK music scene has been responsible for elevating Bhangra to a global level and a growing international audience. Our aim is to introduce a young Bhangra pop audience to the world of theatre and the theatre goers to the ancient art of Bhangra and the new contemporary fusions that exist in Britain today. The time is right for a British Bhangra musical!
