Millions of young people are at risk of contracting HIV and AIDS in Eastern Europe and Russia. ACET wants to offer relevant, proven sex and relationship education to 1 million 13 - 25 year olds in schools, churches, prisons and orphanages, designed to encourage them to make safe, informed decisions and reduce the risk of HIV and AIDS amongst this most vulnerable group..

    Situation

HIV infection rates are rising rapidly in Eastern Europe and Russia. Rapid change has left young people inheriting a very different world to that their parents knew; without many of the strictures and certainties of the previous generation. Increasing levels of drug abuse and sexual activity, amongst teenagers particularly, has led to rising HIV infection rates, which, whilst not yet at the levels of sub Saharan Africa, are in danger of spiralling out of control. Governmenet infrastructure and education services are, in many countries, completely unable to cope and local ACET teams have been generally welcomed into schools, orphanages, prisons and churches with their clear, relevant and culturally sensitive training and prevention programmes aimed at young people. Delivered by volunteers, lectures and seminars aim to give their audience the facts about HIV and AIDS and encourage them to make wise and safe choices about sex and relationships as a result. Because programmes are delivered by volunteers, costs are low, with each lecture to 30 - 50 young people costing in the region of £20, covering training, transport and materials. Whilst behaviour change as a result is notoriously difficult to measure, there is a growing body of evidence pointing to the success of the programme, including clinics in a Russian city where ACET is active reporting no new HIV cases in an entire year, overturning many years of rapidly rising statistics. Each year, another generation of young people need to be reached. ACET is active in 7 countries in Eastern Europe, but would like, with your help, to reach many more young people throughout the region before it is too late for them..
