“Transform our College and we will transform our lives”. That is the message from the students at the National Star College, some of the most severely disabled and disadvantaged young people in the country. Through the provision of excellent educational, therapy and residential facilities the College offers its students the opportunity to develop as young adults and to prepare for as independent an adult life as possible.

    Situation

The Star Appeal will fund the College’s Development Plan and provide excellent facilities for our severely disabled young people both now and in the future. The phased development has already made significant improvements including new and improved student residences, a carbon neutral biomass heating system and a new access road ensuring students are safe and secure around the campus. “I feel so lucky to have come to the Star College but there are many others who just can’t get a place. With better facilities in place a greater range of severely disabled young people will be able to benefit from time at the College” Annie, Current Student. Future phases will develop: Specialist Residential Accommodation: The right residential accommodation can empower and transform the lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged young people. Residential courses enable students to transform their lives by encouraging self development, providing ‘home’ based life skills training, empowering student choice and offering the opportunity to control their environment in a supported community. Therapies Centre: An integrated programme of appropriate therapies can increase mobility, communication, enhance self confidence and transform the lives of severely disabled young people. Therapies will include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, behavioural therapy, enabling assistive technologies and nursing and medical support. Creative Arts and Multi-Media Centre: Creative arts can be a strong enabling power for disabled students with communication difficulties and low levels of literacy. Multi-media in combination with enabling technology work are powerful enabling tools for disabled young people. The centre will provide the right facilities to enhance and develop courses in the arts and multi-media. Reception: A new public entrance with a cafe and shop offering work experience opportunities and work based training (including social enterprise) along with adult education teaching spaces.
