Some young musicians make such astonishing progress that their talent outstrips the funds and opportunities available to them. Our Awards programme exists to help tackle the biggest of all these hurdles: financial need.

    Situation

Developing a young people’s musical potential can be extremely expensive, combining the considerable costs of high quality tuition, purchasing a good instrument, accessing appropriate courses and travelling to master classes, competitions and festivals. Our annual Awards programme for young people aged between 5 and 18 supports those whose families would otherwise find these costs prohibitive. We fundraise to give awards of between £200 and £2000, totalling a minimum of £50,000 per year. We support all the major costs of a young musician’s training mentioned above, assisting instrumentalists making music in any genre. Our key criteria are financial need (all applications are strictly means tested) and exceptional musical talent and potential. Key programme objectives: To give musically talented young people from lower income families the opportunity to develop their musical abilities and fulfil their potential To give considered, timely financial support To recognise that young people from all backgrounds have talent, but that talented young people from economically disadvantaged backgrounds often don’t have the financial support to continue to play beyond short-term state investment To assist the parents of talented young people: every parent wants the best for their children, but supporting a musical child can be difficult, particularly when families are facing other challenges in their lives Summary budget: Cost of Awards: £50,000 per year for two years Total expenditure: £100,000
