Primary education in Kenya and Uganda is now free which means that millions of children now have the opportunity to attend school for the first time. However, the education they are receiving is simply not good enough. Build Africa's Build a School programme aims to ensure that thousands of children across Kenya and Uganda have access to an education which provides them with the knowledge and skills they need to break free of the cycle of poverty in which they are trapped.

    Situation

Working closely with the governments we identify the most needy rural schools in the areas which we work. Lessons at these schools are often held under trees or in classrooms made of mud and sticks. There are hardly any textbooks, desks, sanitary facilities or clean water supplies. As a result attendance and exam results at these schools is very low. Working in partnership with the teachers and school management committees at each school we develop a development plan based on what the schools most urgent needs are. A typical school development plan can include the building of classroom blocks, pit latrine blocks and water tanks as well as the supply of desks, first aid kits and textbooks. Additionally, we work closely with the school management committees and local communities to educate them on the importance of sending their children, especially the girls, to school and to ensure that they are better able to run and maintain the schools on a day to day basis. Higher exam results, an increased number of children going onto secondary schools and increased enrolment and attendance are just some of the effects which are already being seen at some of the schools we already work with. We are committed to replicating these successes in far more schools. To see the current schools we are working with or for more information on Build a School please visit www.build-a-school.org.
