The science is clear. In order to stop runaway climate change, global emissions must peak by 2015 and then fall dramatically as reported by the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change*. Right now, at the UN climate talks in Copenhagen, representatives from countries across the globe are meeting to decide mankind’s response to climate change. We need a solution – an ambitious, strong and fair global agreement which protects the world’s poorest and takes action on the scale the science demands – to match the urgency of the threat. To do this, Friends of the Earth needs your help. * Research report Making a Climate Commitment: Analysis of the first Report (2008) of the UK Committee on Climate Change

    Situation

Friends of the Earth wants an agreement that is strong, fair and ensures we have a good chance of avoiding catastrophic global warming. If we do not get this agreement in Copenhagen, we will continue to campaign for an agreement which does. Friends of the Earth sees these ongoing UN climate talks as a chance to shape an agreement which: 1. Requires rich countries, through a legally binding agreement, to reduce emissions by 40 per cent by 2020 (from 1990 levels) without carbon offsetting. 2. Provides sufficient funding to developing countries from rich countries to help them adapt to climate change and develop low carbon technologies. 3. Includes measures to stop deforestation and protect the rights of over a billion people who are dependent on forests. Deforestation is responsible for 18 per cent of climate changing emissions which is more than the world’s transport sector. We are calling for the world to come together to take bold and decisive action to tackle climate change. Friends of the Earth will not accept an agreement which is fundamentally unfair, places an intolerable burden on developing countries and leaves millions of the world’s poorest people at risk. Please make your donation to our Demand Climate Change campaign. The benefits of a successful outcome at the UN climate talks would be phenomenal. Here at home a fast transition to a low carbon economy will mean exciting new business opportunities, tens of thousands of green collar jobs and protection from the fluctuating costs of fossil fuels. Worldwide it would mean greater climate security, reduced conflict and a stronger global economy. If this is your vision of the future than please help it come to life by supporting our Demand Climate Change campaign now.
