    Situation

Young women are currently selling themselves to local men, particularly visiting fishermen, in order to obtain sanitary towels. They risk contracting HIV just to get sanitary protection so that they can attend school and continue to care for their families whilst menstruating. Challenge Africa has set up a sewing training programme, currently making school uniform for orphans. The whole community will benefit if we can establish a sanitary towel making centre so that vulnerable women can not only have a safe income but can produce cheap, environmentally friendly towels for girls desperately needing them. We have been shipping donated UK towels to the villages but want to make this project sustainable. The women on our tailoring programme are very keen to produce towels for girls at risk and for the local community, to reduce the impact disposable towels are having on their environment. HIV is a huge problem for the villages Challenge Africa works in. This project will mean young women do not have to engage in risky sexual relations in order to procure basic items as well as offering 20 women a reliable income. We require material and equipment, a 1000 litre water tank and a sewing mistress for the first year until the project is self-sufficient. We hope to act as an example for other communities and would be keen to pass on skills and experience.
