Situation

Nursing staff in the Cancer Centre assessed have highlighted the need for creative interventions with young people who are undergoing treatment in oncology and haematology. The primary focus is on medical care with a combined emphasis on meeting immediate psychosocial needs. The treatment for haematological conditions in particular, involves long inpatient stays, away from the family home and physically gruelling treatment regimes. there are limited opportunities for recreation/ arts programmes

Solution

The experience of taking part in a film-making project from start to finish greatly increases confidence once participants realise that they can produce something meaningful and interesting. As we are working with a group of terminally ill patients, the longer term benefits have to be understood in a wider sense as their impact on the quality of life of the patients, reduced isolation as the group work as a team and the legacy that this short film will leave for their family and friends.
