Befrienders for Waltham Forest Older Adults

We already provide a Befriending Service to Isolated older people. However we desperately need more funding to expand this service as we have a waiting list of 40 older people who have requested a home visitor. Situation

Nearly 9,000 older people live alone in Waltham Forest (Census, 2011), we have a waiting list of forty older isolated people who would like weekly visits from a befriender. Some of the people on the waiting list will not see or speak to anyone for days at a time and with very lonely people twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's, we want to reach as many older people as possible.

Solution

We already provide a Befriending Service to Isolated older people. However we desperately need more funding to expand this service to meet demand. By providing home-visiting befrienders and facilitating supported trips for older people on a regular basis the service will rekindle interest in life, improve mental health, increase social skills; build confidence and assist vulnerable older people to form new friendships and develop networks of support.
