‘Get on the Greenside’ is a neighbourhood recycling programme aimed at increasing recycling rates in high density social housing on estates in North Westminster. These estates are in 2 of the City’s most deprived wards (which themselves are within the top 20% most deprived nationally). The project works to raise awareness, increase participation and increase community involvement in promoting local recycling services.

    Situation

'Get on the Greenside' affects change through communication campaigns, recruiting local ‘Green Champions’, education programmes in schools and outreach venues, events, incentives and a differentiated approach to faith groups, ‘Faith Waste’. The success of ‘Get on the Greenside’ relies on the willingness of the community to participate in recycling and to become actively involved in the project. We work with community groups locally to raise awareness of recycling and related environmental issues. Incorporating environmental activities and messages into family events has been an effective way of engaging young people and the wider community.
