    Situation

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are known to be at particularly high risk of developing sleep disorders. These are often difficult to manage and have a very debilitating impact on both the children and the families affected. Over time these disorders can become entrenched and increasingly resistant to intervention. There is a need for a concerted programme of research to investigate the character of these sleep disorders, their prevalence and associated risks factors and what interventions are most effective. This proposed research project provides the foundation for such a program of research. In this important study a leading team of psychologists and researchers will thoroughly examine current research regarding sleep problems and ASD. The team will then develop a comprehensive research database that will include details of the prevalence of sleep disorders in children with ASD; the main risk factors for developing these sleep disorders; sleep characteristics; details of the connections between sleep problems and daytime behaviour; effects on child and families; and details of different types of interventions designed to improve sleep. Moreover, once developed, the database will be of enormous benefit for researchers, professionals and family members. For researchers it will provide a greater understanding of character and prevalence of the disorder; aid in the development of hypotheses for more targeted neuropsychological and behavioural research, and assist in the development of a screening tool for identifying those most at risk. For professionals and family members it will be useful in the design of appropriate interventions. In addition, it will provide a valuable resource for the wider dissemination of clear and impartial guidance for dealing with sleep problems among children with ASD. A donation of £35,000 will enable the completion of this project.
