We want to introduce a Clinical Psychologist to our multi disciplinary team to work with patients and carers who are experiencing severe psychological distress to help the person address their issues and develop coping strategies which will aid psychological well-being

    Situation

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) report that about half of patients with a diagnosis of cancer experience levels of anxiety and depression severe enough to affect their quality of life adversely. NICE advise that all Specialist Palliative Care (SPC) centres, such as Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, should have a psychologist on the team. We do not currently have such a resource - and want to remedy this

    Solution

The appointment of a Clinical Psychologist will ensure that we can offer our patients and their families with appropriate and skilled support. Although we have an experienced Patient and Family Services (PAFs) team, we are lacking the specialist resources to provide the highest level of psychological care recommended by NICE. The Clinical Psychologist will be an integral member of the PAFs team and support other clinicians in their care of patients and their families
