We currently run an advice service to HMP Highdown with 5 volunteers and one part time paid supervisor 2 days per week which we would very much like to expand to meet demand. Particularly in the areas of immigration advice, those suffering from HIV/Aids and mental ill and training for Peer Support

Situation

To improve the mental well being of the prisoners by providing appropriate advice and support. This is particularly relevant to those on remand who often suffer very high levels of stress, and subsequent ill health, whilst waiting for court appearances. We work to maintain their family lives, immigration status, take up of benefits and housing issues and often negotiate with employers etc. to retain their working positions particularly where they are not brought to trial or found innocent.

Solution

By providing additional paid supervision and by recruiting and training additional volunteers to support the project. We also would like to train further prisoners to become "Peer Supporters" and thereby support their fellow prisoners. This gives them administrative and negotiation skills and improves their general well-being and self esteem. We would like to raise general awareness of the issues facing those in prison and their families to the broader public through our social policy work.
