Situation

Project will address isolation, enabling young carers to have desperately-needed time away from the stress of providing care. Many young carers deal with significant emotional distress brought about by living with/caring for a parent or sibling with life-limiting conditions, physical/mental ill health or terminal illness. Where young carers can find it difficult to integrate into the larger group or take advantage of recreational activities we offer one-to-one support to build trust.

Solution

This approach has proved effective in helping young carers have time out from their caring role and integrate with the wider groups once confidence increases. Issue-based workshops improve competence and confidence for young carers whilst providing care. They also increase their emotional resilience during their caring journey. They are delivered in partnership with mental health teams, school nurses and other professionals at our office base, in school venues and in community settings.
