In 2009, we aim to provide at least 80,000 books, at a cost of just £2 a book (but worth an estimated £967,000 due to the high value donations we receive from UK publishers) for our partners in Uganda. We respond to partner libraries’ detailed request forms so that the materials they receive are relevant and appropriate to their needs.

    Situation

Estimates show that in the 2004-2005 school year, nearly 7.2 million children were enrolled in school in Uganda, and 50 per cent were girls. However, in some regions, less than half of children enter primary school at the official entry age of six. Fewer than half of all pupils reach the last grade and one-third of the adult population is unable to read and write. Low levels of school enrolment also mean that children miss out on access to information and support on health related issues, including HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, and information that can help them deal with exploitation. Book Aid International works with partners in Uganda to meet the challenges of Universal Primary Education, to reach children living in poor rural communities, orphans and girls, and to support the education of refugee children. In 2009 we aim to provide over 80,000 books, worth an estimated £967,000, to our partners in Uganda. Our key partner is Kyambogo University, based in Kampala, which distributes our books to schools.. We also work with the National Library of Uganda (NLU), which distributes our books to local authority and community-owned libraries throughout Uganda. Uganda has many community libraries, set up to improve literacy, education and development. Books change lives. We need to raise £171,000 to send these books and manage our programme in Uganda in 2009.
