In 2009, we aim to provide at least 32,000 books, at a cost of £2 a book (but worth an estimated £386,000 due to the high value donations we receive from UK publishers) for our partners in Namibia. We respond to partner libraries’ detailed request forms so that the materials they receive are relevant and appropriate to their needs.

    Situation

In Namibia, primary, secondary and tertiary school enrolment is around 64.7% , with equal numbers of girls and boys enrolled. Despite impressive efforts, children’s reading ability in Namibia remains poor, with indications that fewer than a quarter of grade 6 primary school students are reaching the desired reading level. In 2009, we aim to provide over 32,000 books and learning resources, worth an estimated £386,000, to school and community libraries in Namibia. We focus on schools that have been identified as having acute needs for new and relevant books, as well as staff that have the skills to manage these resources. Staff have been given training courses and Book Aid International has provided school libraries with new and appropriate books and learning resources so that students can develop a love for reading that will contribute to their overall education. We also helped our partner organisations to purchase over a thousand books locally, 40% of which were in local languages. Books change lives. We need to raise £70,000 to provide these books to Namibia in 2009.
